Washing wool

Washing wool

Garments made from untreated wool are not washed nearly as often as cotton garments. This is because dirt settles on the surface of the wool fibres and because untreated wool contains wool fat that naturally inhibits bacterial growth. Wool has to be chemically treated with a synthetic substance that coats the wool fibre in order for it to be approved for machine washing. Nøstebarn’s garments are not chemically treated in this way as we believe it is safer and because all the good properties of the wool are retained. This is why our wool is not approved for the washing machine, but is hand-washed at 30°C using soap for untreated wool. Many people find, however, that they can use the wool programme 0-30°C on their washing machines, but this is at their own responsibility, as the quality of different wool programmes vary greatly. Wool shrinks if there is too much movement, too high a temperature and too much soap. See our washing instructions for details.
